CURRICULUM INTENT

Have you ever wondered why people behave the way they do, or how society shapes our lives? Why do some people exhibit deviant or criminal behaviours and how does education really shape our lives? Sociology is the study of people, power and social structures. You will explore big questions around family, education, crime and inequality drawing on the works of key thinkers like Karl Marx, who argued that class conflict drives social change, and Emile Durkheim who saw society as a system held together by shared values. You’ll look at real studies such as Ann Oakley’s research on gender roles, Howard Becker’s work on labelling in schools and Stanley Milgram’s work on responding to authority. This will help you understand how social forces affect everyday life. If you’re curious about the world and want to develop critical thinking skills, Sociology is your chance to see the world through a new lens!

Pupils will study for 2 papers which they will sit in the summer exam period. Paper 1 includes Families and Education and Paper 2 includes Crime and Deviance and Social Stratification. Sociological research methods runs throughout the two papers. The exam board is AQA.
