CURRICULUM INTENT

PSHE (personal, social, and health education) is an integral part of the school’s curriculum. The content of the subject allows pupils to explore different topics and issues that they might encounter in life. Pupils are given the space and freedom to investigate, question and evaluate different subject matter. As well as developing skills and knowledge to stay healthy and safe throughout life. The department works hard to guarantee that pupils are taught high-quality lessons that are well resourced, engaging and interesting. We strive to create a safe learning environment whereby pupils are given the freedoms to explore different topics and to raise questions if they are unsure.

KEY STAGE 3

At Key Stage 3, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to make informed, healthy and responsible choices. Our PSHE curriculum covers relationships, health and wellbeing, and living in the wider world, building progressively across Years 7–9.

Pupils explore topics including friendships and relationships, emotional wellbeing, online safety, identity and self-esteem, peer pressure, consent and healthy and unhealthy relationships. They also develop their understanding of alcohol, smoking, vaping and drugs, including the risks, legal implications and sources of support.

KEY STAGE 4

At Key Stage 4, pupils build on their prior learning and prepare for the opportunities and challenges of adult life. The curriculum continues to develop understanding of healthy relationships, sexual health, consent, risk and personal safety, alongside wider health and wellbeing.

Pupils explore issues including substance misuse and addiction, managing relationships and emotional challenges, sexual health, the influence of media and pornography, and accessing appropriate support. They are encouraged to think critically, make informed decisions and understand how to maintain their own wellbeing and contribute positively to relationships and society.
